Read the Bible in One Year
Walk through the Bible with a companion who explains it all — just as Jesus opened the scriptures on the road to Emmaus.
Day 1 · Genesis 1–2
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”
Genesis 1:1–2, KJV
What This Means Today
Before anything existed — before light, before time, before you — God was already at work. The Hebrew word for “spirit” here is ruach, which also means breath and wind. Picture it: God’s breath hovering over the darkness, about to speak everything into being. This is where your story starts too.
Your Companion on the Road
Just as Jesus walked alongside the disciples and opened the scriptures to them, your Emmaus Road companion is here whenever you need clarity, context, or comfort.
Why would God ask Abraham to sacrifice Isaac? That feels so cruel.
That’s one of the most honest questions you can ask about this passage. The Hebrew word used here for “test” is nasah — it implies refining, not cruelty. Think of it less as a trap and more as a moment where Abraham discovers what he actually believes.
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”
Luke 24:27
